Various films have been made about the mainly pitiable circumstances in which the Rroma have to survive in Europe. But none af them has ever tried to find a common starting point.  Or even tried to search for and explained what Roma people all over europe allies. We think we can find the common spirit of the Roma people in their passion for music.

We aim to make a movie which shows the negative as well as the positive aspects and the richness of their music. The thematic sequence of the film will provide a contemporary image of the Rroma in Europe - without pretending to be exhaustive. We will show various important themes and music styles, social  cases and issues and show a spectaculair profile of a group of people that is mainly known from negative images and messages.

ORIGIN OF THE FILMPLAN

The filmplan originated after SOL FILMprodukties produced the film trilogy GIPSY LIFE: SINTI&ROMA (2007-2008) which was directed by Bob Entrop. These three films (90 minutes each) give an image of the Sinti and Roma in the Netherlands and the relation to the Holocaust, education, medical care, work, religion and music.

LOGLINE

Djelem, Djelem, the Lost Anthem, is a 110 minutes cinema documentary, a roadmovie whose  protagonists experience firsthand the split experience of an incredibly proud people, who, having faced  a thousand years of European denigration, have a hard time finding the psychological strength to stand up for their own rights.   Rroma people do not stand up. Why? In search of this conundrum, the film travels through a microcosm of the Rroma world in different countries of Europe, providing hithertho unseen glimpses of  Rroma culture, including of course their  music, but not in the way recounted by other films: here it used only as a corridor into the soul of a very troubled nation,  their behavior and the struggle for social and political inclusion. Produced and told by a Rrom protagonist and a 'Gadjo' director, the film observes this from both an "inside" and an "outside point of view, providing a unique take on the mentality differences influencing the way the outside world regards the Rroma and the way they regard 'the others'.
